D.I.Y. Recoverable Fabric Bulletin Board Tutorial

You’ll need:

- Foam insulation board (Mine was a pink pre-cut square from Home Depot)
- Sturdy fabric, cut 2 inches larger than insulation board on all sides
- Flat-headed sewing pins

1. Lay the fabric on your foam board, making sure that you have 2 inches of fabric on all sides to tuck under.

2. Without picking up the board or disturbing your fabric, secure each corner with a pin–– as seen in the second photo–– making sure to pull each side taunt prior to pinning.

3. After all four corners have been secured, turn the board over. (I found it helpful to stand it up.) As in the third photo, pin fabric to the back of the board, pulling fabric taunt prior to pinning. Use as many pins as needed.

And that’s it! Take out the pins and recover when you want a new look for your bulletin board.

D.I.Y. Decor: Recycled Wood Pallet Shelf

I acquired this great wood pallet several months ago, courtesy of an alley somewhere in northwest Chicago. Like the unabashed d.i.y. nut I am, I stopped the bus on my way home from work to salvage my treasure––and then got right back on the bus. Luckily I was too busy thinking about what I was going to do with my pallet to notice all the strange looks I was getting.

I finally decided to make a shelf out of it for the wall above my sewing machine. To make it work with the room’s clean, bright, and rustic-chic style, I painted it white with a single, thin coat, which lets the wood show through a bit for a distressed look.

I am really terrible about giving specific directions, partly because I learned to sew when I was 9 so it feels very second nature to me, and partly because I make things up as I go and don’t pay attention to what I’m doing. This probably makes me a terrible seamstress.

I just tried to find a basic tutorial for you online, but there really aren’t any that I’d feel good about recommending. Hm. I guess I should probably make one for y’all. Be on the look out for the official tutorial by the end of the month.

My poor tertiary Te. It wants so badly to execute the idealistic notions of Ne-Fi.

Te says, “Yes! Brilliant idea! I’ll help you create a catalog of all the best outfits you’ve put together from your current wardrobe, so that on mornings when you’re too tired to put thought into looking nice, you can refer to your lookbook instead of resorting to jeans and a tee-shirt.”

But then Ne and Fi say, “That’s all well and good, but we’ve already got millions of projects on our queue––which we prioritize according to whatever we feel like doing at the moment. And admittedly, often what we feel like doing at the moment is watching Downton Abbey…
